Easy weight loss? Intermittent calorie reduction can lead to weight control
Hany S. Abed, B.Pharm., M.B.B.S., of the University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, Australia and colleagues evaluated the effect of a structured weight reduction program on atrial fibrillation symptoms. The study was conducted between June 2010 and December 2011 among overweight and obese patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation. Patients underwent a median (midpoint) of 15 months of follow-up. Patients were randomized to weight management or general lifestyle advice.

The study conducted by researchers at the prestigious Stanford University has found that surgical weight loss may be able to reverse the effects of ageing. This first-ever study exploring the relationship between surgical weight loss and ageing has found a connection between surgical weight loss and the ageing biomarker called the telomere; a DNA sequence found at the end of chromosomes. Telomeres usually become shorter as a person gets older. Telomere shortening is associated with age-related diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
